Come cycle this highly scenic greenway from colourful Westport town along the coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way route. The world class Great Western Greenway is a traffic free cycling and ramble trail, which follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway which closed in 1937 and is the longest off-road ramble and cycling trail in Ireland. This cycling route offers lots of opportunities to take in the spectacular visas and stop at cute local villages, pubs and famous landmarks along the Wild Atlantic Way. Ireland holy pilgrim mountain of Croagh Patrick, with its iconic conical shape rises to the south of Clew Bay, bearing testament to the many pilgrims who walked up this mountain in their bare feet to visit the tiny church at the top of the mountain.

  • Pick up your bikes in Westport and get a briefing on what you can see and do while cycling the 42km Great Western Greenway independently and at your own pace. Drop off the bikes back in Westport by the end of the day.
  • The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque village of Newport.  Stop off at a café or pub for a coffee, drink or a meal.
  • Cycle through the quaint and picturesque area and village of Mulranny, famed for its magnificent long beaches along Clew Bay with views across the bay to Ireland’s Holy mountain Croagh Patrick. Stop at a cafe or hotel to take in the spectacular views!
  • Cycle around scenic Clew Bay with its many islands in the bay on the Wild Atlantic Way which overlooks Croagh Patrick to the south and the Nephin mountain range in the north.
  • All along this cycle route catch views of Ireland’s holy pilgrim mountain of Croagh Patrick rising to the south of Clew Bay.
