Dublin

The very best things to do in Dublin – tours, experiences, activities and days out.

Dublin is shaped by almost 1,200 years’ history, from Viking origins to today’s sophisticated capital, abuzz with culture. As you would expect, there is a dizzying array of things to do in Dublin, and it’s our job as specialists in immersive tours of Ireland, to help you make the most of your time in this incredible city.

The Very Vest Things To Do in Dublin – Tours, Experiences, Activities and Days Out

Dublin is poised on the east coast of Ireland at the mouth of the River Liffey. Founded by the Vikings in 841 AD, remnants of the city’s fascinating past can still be seen today: Wood Quay and a former Celtic Christian church at Christ Church Cathedral.

Life in medieval Dublin centred around Dublin Castle, a centre of activity and trade, and the building remains in use still, as a venue for prestigious presidential functions and a popular tourist attraction.

Fast forward to the Georgian period, in the late-18th – early-19th century, where Dublin was redeveloped in great swathes. The grand squares and towering townhouses form some of the city’s most alluring architectural attractions.

Today, Dublin is a thriving European Capital, with a world-famous university – Trinity College – and a lively cultural and arts scene. Dublin’s pubs are second to none, and the reputation of its food and restaurant scene is growing by the day.

The beauty of Dublin is its size – covering an area of just 921km², it is possible to cover a lot of ground and many of Dublin’s highlights, in a relatively short period of time. However, we have no doubt your Ireland Wild Escape’s tour of Dublin will leave you wanting more.

Dublin’s coastal attractions are significant, too. From the affluent suburbs of Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey south of the City Centre – the latter famed for its annual literary festival – to the fishing village of Howth, a destination for fabulous, fresh seafood.

HIGHLIGHTS

Things to do
in Dublin

Dublin is undoubtedly one of the top city break destinations in Europe. As such, you’ll find a wealth of things to do. Dublin’s highlights, we think, include the following:

  • Kayaking on the River Liffey – float down The Quays and admire some of Dublin’s finest architectural sites, include the Four Courts, Ireland’s principle centre for justice, and The Custom House, designed by James Gandon in the late-18th century.
  • Cycle in the Phoenix Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe and home to Dublin Zoo. Look out for the famous deer, originally brough here for hunting purposes in the 17th century and now roaming wild, and wave to the President as you pass by his grand residence, Áras an Uachtaráin.
  • Explore literary Dublin – literature is deeply embedded in life here in Dublin, from Gulliver’s Travels to Ulysses and Dracula – all either set here or penned by Dublin writers. A literary tour of Dublin might include the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the statue of Oscar Wilde opposite his birthplace, in Merrion Square; a visit to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells and marvel at the iconic The Long Room, home to over 200,000 of the College’s oldest and most precious books; and the James Joyce Centre, which is dedicated to the great writer’s life and works.
  • The Guinness Storehouse one of the places you must visit in Dublin is The Guinness Storehouse, the most popular visitor attraction in Ireland. Here, you will explore the story of Ireland’s most iconic beer in a 7-floor, state-of-the-art visitor experience. The last stop is Gravity Bar, where you’ll be treating to 360-degree views of the Dublin skyline whilst supping a pint of the famous ‘black stuff’.

Dublin pub and foodie tours – Dublin’s pub scene is a microcosm of the city’s incredible history. On any self-respecting Dublin pub tour, expect to be taken to The Brazen Head, the city’s oldest pub, established in 1198, and The Dawson Lounge, which claims to be Dublin’s smallest pub. A Dublin food tour, meanwhile, is a great way to see just how far the capital’s cuisine has come in recent years, from the finest pub grub to Michelin-starred eats.
